Transparency and Accountability Should Be a Priority in the SenateSubmitted by Elisabeth Thu Jan 06 2011 11:33:00 GMT-0500 (EST)
The League has engaged Congressional leaders for years on the rules that govern the Senate and the House of Representatives. 2011 is shaping up to be no different. Yesterday I sent a letter to Senators urging them to reform the rules of the Senate. The League also joined coalition partners to urge the same.
The most recent Congress saw 275 filibusters, the highest number in history, according to the New York Times. The filibuster has allowed for incredible amounts of time wasted in the Senate. This is particularly disappointing given the fact that the Senate's greatest strength is its ability to conduct open debate to overcome conflicting interests. It is likely that the conversation about Senate rules will continue for some time. The League will not slow down in our work to demand progress from those that we elect.
