A true public servant takes leaveSubmitted by Elisabeth Thu Dec 09 2010 16:48:00 GMT-0500 (EST)
Tomorrow will be the last day that Gracia Hillman sits as a commissioner on the Election Assistance Commission (EAC). Gracia, who, in full disclosure, served as the League’s executive director from 1990-1994, has been at the EAC since its inception seven year ago. The League family will miss her voice and dedication and so will America’s voters and election officials!
The EAC was set-up in late 2003 by the 2002 Help America Vote Act (HAVA). Following the crisis of confidence in America’s elections systems after the 2000 Presidential election, the U.S. Congress got to work to try to rebuild voter confidence and improve the electoral process.
We have been proud of our work with Gracia and the EAC over the last seven years, helping to lend our expertise and oversight of enforcement and implementation of HAVA’s recommendations. During her tenure she met with many Leagues and members, at times traveling around the country to participate in our forums and events. Gracia’s accomplishments at the EAC speak to her commitment to both improving our nation’s elections systems and protecting voter’s rights. The League wishes Gracia well in her new endeavors!
