Becoming a Democracy
Please join the League of Women Voters of Washington as we welcome Kristin Eberhard, director of democracy at Sightline Institute and author of the new book, Becoming a Democracy: How We Can Fix the Electoral College, Gerrymandering, and Our Elections.
Kristin is an active member of the League of Women Voters of Oregon, and her book is a playbook for this particular moment. As we reel from the disruptions of the November elections (and the triumphs of turnout and engagement!), and prepare for the important work ahead, Becoming a Democracy is a field guide for empowering voters and fulfilling our promise of democracy for all. The book walks readers through 10 big but practical ideas for making elections free, fair, and secure, without waiting for a constitutional amendment or a new Supreme Court. We can:

We’ve had success on many of these issues, and the Washington State Legislature will be addressing a number them in 2021: fighting money in politics, re-enfranchising people released from prison, and establishing a special kind of citizen's assembly—a Citizen Initiative Review.
