Democracy Rocks 2020!
Rocks painted with the words

And indeed it did – 160 advocates gathered in Olympia on January 21 for Democracy Lobby Day to speak to a variety of democracy bills supported by League of Women Voters of Washington and Fix Democracy First. LWVWA President Lunell Haught spoke of the importance of democracy issues. Various parts of the day will continue to be posted to the same link. Check back to see more of the day that was filled with presentations by bill sponsors, how to advocate tips from Nancy Sapiro and Pam Crone (LWVWA contract lobbyists), and most importantly constituent visits to some 80 of our state legislators. Our Democracy Team presented priority bills for the day

Stay up to date on action on these bills by linking to the Making Democracy Work® pages below.

It will be a busy next two weeks as we move toward Feb 7 (the first cut-off) the last day to read in committee reports (pass bills out of committee and read them into the record on the floor) in house of origin, except House fiscal committees and Senate Ways & Means and Transportation committees.

Rep. Mike Pellicciotti provides information on the revolving door bill and the redistricting bill.

This Week's Action Alerts!

If you do nothing else this week, these are the most important actions you can take. Responding to these alerts is a great way for you to have a big impact with a very small investment of time.

Close the Revolving Door from Legislator to Lobbyist

This year we have a real chance at passing something we’ve been working on for years: prohibiting legislators from leaving office and immediately taking a job as a lobbyist. This practice is so problematic that over 31 states and even Congress prohibit it. But Washington state is way behind. We allow someone to be a legislator one day and to come back as a lobbyist the next. Please support HB 1067 and SB 5033 by contacting your legislators here.

Bring High Capacity Magazine Bills to a Vote

Restricting High Capacity Magazines HB 2240 and SB 6077 can save lives and injuries. Please urge your legislators to move bills to the floor of the respective chambers for a vote of the entire body. Send a message here.
