Democracy Lobby Day a Success!
LWVWA Contract Lobbyists Pam Crone and Nancy Sapiro (backs to camera) speak to the over 120 participants in the Lobby Day. Attendees learned about top election-related bills and then spent time visiting legislators’ offices lobbying for them.
Thank you to Kathy Sakahara, LWVWA Elections Issue Chair, and Cindy Black, Executive Director of Fix Democracy First. The two organizations co-sponsored the event.
First Calendar Cut-off
This Friday, February 2 is the cut off for all bills that do not have a fiscal note. These bills must pass their policy committee by Friday in order to remain an active bill.
This Week's Alert!
If you do nothing else, here are the most important actions you can take:
Take Action To Abolish The Death Penalty
The League of Women Voters has long been in favor of ending the death penalty and replacing it with life in prison without the possibility of parole. Public opinion is slowly turning against the death penalty because it has become an arduous process, excessive in cost, cruel to victims' families as legal proceedings drag on for years, disproportionate and unfair to those without means.
SB 6219, the Reproductive Parity Act, will soon come to the Full Senate for a vote
This bill would ensure reproductive parity in all Washington state health plans, establishing contraceptive coverage requirements for health plans, and an abortion coverage requirement for health plans that provide coverage for maternity care. Access to the full range of health benefits and preventative services, as guaranteed under the laws of this state, provides all Washingtonians the opportunity to lead healthier and more productive lives. SB 6219 is currently in the Senate Rules Committee.
Contact your Senator and ask her or him to vote for this bill when it comes to a vote in the Full Senate.
Fight Back Against Dark Money
Despite our campaign finance reporting requirements, special interests have found another loophole that allows them to donate virtually unlimited amounts of cash to campaign efforts without any of us ever knowing who they are. And now they are flooding elected officials’ offices with emails demanding that that loophole remain. We may not be able to match them in dollars, so we have to counter them with our voices!
