The US House of Representatives just introduced HR4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA), and they intend to move quickly to pass it! At this critical moment in our nation’s history, as the right to vote remains under threat, we need the VRAA more than ever. This legislation is vitally needed to fully restore the Voting Rights Act and ensure that discriminatory voting tactics are stopped in their tracks.
Since the Shelby County v. Holder decision rolled back key provisions of the Voting Rights Act, states have continually enacted discriminatory voting policies and practices that disproportionately target communities of color. The Voting Rights Act is a central pillar of our democracy; without its enforceable powers the foundation of America’s democracy has been destabilized.
It is time for you to make your voice heard in the protection of our democracy. We need YOU to contact your representative and tell them to support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
The VRAA represents the best defense of our freedom to vote and speaks towards the promise of American democracy. Access to the vote is not about politics; it’s about justice and equality. We must ensure that every voter is treated fairly at the ballot box and has equal access to the vote. We must continue to make our voices heard.
Join the League of Women Voters in calling for the House of Representatives to show their leadership on the freedom to vote. Our democracy cannot wait any longer to restore the Voting Rights Act. Unless we want to see the continued plague of anti-voter bills, something must be done.
