BARRIERS TO IMPROVING ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN BUILDINGS

As the 2009 McKinsey & Company report Unlocking Energy Efficiency in the U.S. Economy points out, the opportunity for greater energy efficiency is substantial -- but complex and persistent barriers stand in the way of unlocking this full potential. There are four challenges to achieving greater energy efficiency in buildings.

In addition, there are structural, behavioral, and availability barriers to greater efficiency.

The report suggests solutions, which fall into four categories.

These suggested solutions are explored in detail in the next section, Public Policies to Promote Improved Energy Efficiency in Buildings.
