Our democracy is strongest when every person has their voice heard. But today, over 20,000 Washingtonians who are living in their communities, paying taxes, and working hard for their families cannot vote because they are impacted by the criminal legal system. For the months or years that they are on community supervision, they are denied a voice in our democracy and have no say in the issues that affect their daily lives.
This year, we have the opportunity to change this injustice by passing legislation to allow every citizen living in the community to vote. If Washington joins together to restore the voting rights of those most directly impacted by the legal system who live in our communities, we can create a future where Black/African American and Indigenous communities are empowered, our criminal legal system is more equitable, and our democracy is truly representative.
