Climate change is a crisis. Salmon are endangered. We cannot continue to do business as usual. We need local jurisdictions to plan for how they will address their fair share of responsibility for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, restore salmon habitat and improve environmental justice.
There are three bills in the Senate — E2SHB 1117, E2SHB 1099, and ESHB 1241 — that have been passed by the House and would modify the Growth Management Act if adopted. They would require local jurisdictions to include new elements in their comprehensive plans to mitigate climate change and improve resiliency. They require consultation with Tribes and one of the bills would extend planning update timelines from every eight to every 10 years.
The Legislature may be reluctant to make such drastic changes to the Growth Management Act. But our League position that climate change is a crisis suggests that we need local jurisdictions to do this hard work.
These three bills are being heard on Tuesday, March 16, in the Senate Housing and Local Government Committee. Your help is needed to persuade the committee and the Senate as a whole to move these bills to passage. You can sign in pro on the Climate Change Issue Web Page in support of these bills for the public hearing. We ask that you also use this Action Alert to let your Senator know that you want him or her to support these bills.
