Take Action: U.S. House to take Historic Vote on DC Statehood
The District of Columbia is home to over 700,000 people and yet does not have voting members in the U.S House and Senate. The people of the District of Columbia are denied a voice in Congress and are thus unable to advocate for or fight against federal policies that do in fact, affect their daily lives, while also dealing with Congress’s interference in its local policies.
The people of Washington, DC deserve the same rights as Americans living in the 50 states. They deserve full voting representation in the U.S. Congress and it's time to end Congressional interference in their local government. LWVUS supports the creation of the 51st state from the residential and commercial areas of the District of Columbia, preserving a smaller federal district as the nation's capital.
This week, the U.S. House Of Representatives will vote on H.R. 51, the Washington DC Admission Act. This legislation is an historic opportunity to ensure that DC residents are no longer disenfranchised. Don't let the will and voice of 700,000 people go by unnoticed and unaccounted for. Urge your Representative to support DC statehood and vote YES on H.R. 51.
